Rough Day? Mommy Needs A Drink!

First of all I want to apologize, well sort of. I've been extremely busy lately. Its been about 18 weeks since I've posted anything. In fact the last post I did was published the day I found out I was going to be induced. So, 18 weeks and a very healthy 17lb 4oz (25.25" long) baby boy later, here I am. I've since already returned to work and am attempting to get into a groove. Anyway, here's a good post for you all. It's hot out. I know it, you know it, the thermometer is bursting. So I've found a few "warm weather drinks" for you and some virgin ones for the kids so they don't feel left out... just don't get the glasses confused.

**Grape Crush - FOR MOM**
Having a Grape Crush is like drinking a spiked grape soda minus the artificial flavors, high-fructose corn syrup and food coloring. YumSugar put their own spin on a recipe from Butter Restaurant, utilizing muddled red grapes and freshly squeezed lemon juice. What a fun way to get a boost of vitamin C!

Ingredients - 8 seedless red grapes, 1-1/2 ounces grape juice, 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, 2 ounces vodka, 1-3 ounces soda water, to taste, Lemon wheel, for garnish

Directions
   1. In shaker or mixing glass, muddle grapes. Add in ice, grape juice, lemon juice and vodka.
   2. Shake vigorously, strain over lowball glass with ice, and top off soda water to taste. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

** Fresh Citrus Daquiri - FOR ALL**
Colorful daiquiris dance in my head… Banana. Lime. Peach. Orange. Pineapple. Coconut. The flavor possibilities are endless for these frosty, slushy, swirled beverages of fruity goodness. And yes, kids can get in on the action – because a virgin daiquiri is delicious – it’s really just an extra frosty smoothie. And we’ll serve up none of those fluorescent-colored, high fructose sweetened daiquiris here. No sir. All fresh fruit, all natural. Don't want Orange/Banana/Lime? Mix up your own masterpiece!

Fresh Orange Banana Lime Daiquiri

Ingredients - 1 c fresh squeezed orange juice, 2 ripe bananas, frozen preferred, 2 limes, squeezed, 1/2 cup frozen peaches OR mango, 1/2 cup frozen pineapple, 3/4 cup ice (or use juice ice cubes for even more flavor), pinch salt, 2 tsp agave syrup (opt’l)
Directions - Blend. Pour. Salt glass rims (optional) serve with a lime-slice garnish.

** Mojito - FOR MOM**Mojitos are made with fresh ingredients and zero-calorie soda water, making the drink a much better choice than both a gin and tonic or rum and coke. The classic Cuban cocktail is even better with the addition of fresh fruit like strawberries, mangoes, or pineapple. Adding fruit is a win-win since it allows you to cut down on the amount of sugar in the classic mojito recipe.

Ingredients - 1 teaspoon sugar, 1/2 lime, 3 sprigs mint, 1.5 ounces light rum, Soda water

Directions
  1. Put the sugar in a highball glass (or any 8- to 12-ounce glass), squeeze in the juice of 1/2 small lime, and toss in the squeezed lime shell.
  2. Add mint sprigs and muddle for a moment. Then add the light rum and handful of ice, and fill with chilled soda water.
**Watermelon Frosty - FOR ALL**
Fresh, juicy watermelon has that instant gratification effect on people. Kinda like freshly baked bread, warm oven cookies, hot pizza or a bowl of cherries. It begs to be tasted. Now. But finally, chopped up seedless watermelon and tossed it into the freezer for a half day. And frosty bliss follows...

Ingredients - 2 1/4 cups frozen watermelon cubes, 1/2+ cup water, 2 Tbsp maple syrup, 1 large lemon, squeezed (lime juice also works very well! use 2 limes), 1 fresh banana, Garnish: a few slices of watermelon - with rind on - frozen.

Directions - Blend Pour. Garnish with frozen watermelon/rind slices. Serve! Enjoy.

**Basil Gimlet - FOR MOM**
Light, refreshing and crisp, a traditional basil gimlet clocks in at 215 calories, but when made with shochu (like this basil gimlet recipe), it doesn't even hit the 100-calorie mark. Best of all, a basil gimlet feels light going down—the combination of basil and lime gives the cocktail a nice clean taste that isn't heavy at all. Make it even more interesting by muddling some cucumber into the drink.

Ingredients - 4-5 large basil leaves, 1/2 ounce agave nectar or simple syrup, 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice,  2 1/2 ounces shochu, ice

Directions
  1. In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, muddle the basil leaves with the sweetener of your choice.
  2. Fill glass three-quarters of the way with ice cubes. Add the alcohol and lime juice and shake well.
  3. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with the remaining basil leaf.

**Pina Colada Smoothie - FOR ALL**
Ingredients 2 1/2 cups fresh pineapple chunks, 1/2 cup light coconut milk, 1/2 cup sweetened flaked coconut , 1 tablespoon honey, 1 cup ice cubes
Directions Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve immediately.

**Bramble - FOR MOM**
A mixture of gin, lemon, fresh blackberries, and blackberry liqueur, the bramble is a classic Summer cocktail. Change things up a bit and make it even more warm-weather friendly with this variation of the classic—the tequila bramble. If you're not into blackberries—don't worry! Any Summer berry will do great in this drink.

Ingredients - 5 blackberries, 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice, Crushed ice, 1/2 ounce agave nectar, 1/2 ounce of crème de mûre (blackberry-flavored liqueur), 1 1/2 ounces blanco tequila

Directions
  1. In a rocks glass, muddle blackberries with lime juice.
  2. Fill the glass with crushed ice; add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Serve with a straw.
**Virgin Banana Margaritas - FOR ALL**
A surprising twist on the classic frozen margarita, this refreshing drink offers just the right mix of sour and sweet.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • lime wedges
  • Sanding sugar, for glasses
  • Ice cubes
  • 3 bananas, peeled
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
Directions
  1. To sugar-rim the glasses, rub a lime wedge around rim of 2 stemmed goblets. Fill a saucer with sanding sugar. Dip goblet, upside down, into sugar.
  2. Fill blender half full of ice cubes. Add lime juice, bananas, granulated sugar, and milk; blend. Taste for sweetness, adding more sugar, if desired. Blend a few seconds more; pour into sugar-rimmed glasses. Serve immediately.
